Video Ideas

I have an unhealthy obsession with the Internet and mostly with YouTube. I keep a pretty close tab on almost all things viral. I was actually surprised how long it took before I saw the Gangnam Style video. Because I’m so interested in what is the latest craze I’m also curious if I have the ability to make content that would be popular on the internet.

One of my favorite YouTube channels is RhettAndLink. They are masters of internet video. They have a good balance of music and comedy. It also helps that they are childhood friends and have great chemistry together. I think the difference between them and me is that they started acting on their crazy video ideas a long time ago and now they are to a point where they have enough skill and a large enough audience that just about any idea they come up with will work.

I get ideas for videos but then as I let the ideas grow I try to imagine how I will accomplish what I want. I begin making excuses in my head that I lack skill to execute, I need people to collaborate with, I need more time, better equipment and the list goes on and on. At the moment I have two videos that I’m trying to get done. Meanwhile, I’ve come up with ideas for a few more videos. It is a battle between “Just Do It” and “Do It Right”.

I can do mediocre videos fine. I’ve proven that I have the ability to make myself record, edit and post videos. What I haven’t mastered yet is creating consistently awesome videos on a regular basis and that, my friends, is the key to building a loyal following.

One of the books I read this month was “Poke the Box” by Seth Godin. The thesis of the book was that to be successful one must be a starter. He also explains that starters aren’t starters unless they finish or ship. It doesn’t do any good to start a project unless you ship it.  When you ship that is when you really learn.  You learn what works and what doesn’t works.  Until you ship something you really don’t know if it will be a success but if you ship a lot and improve and adjust course each time then the chances are you will eventually find success.

My sense is that most people are like this.  If you have an idea take immediate action.  Even that just means scheduling time in your calendar to work on the idea.  Time for me to take my own advice.

Here are a couple videos that are inspiring me to start a dancing channel.  I should probably finish my other videos first though.

2012 YouTube Hot Wheels Derby Results

We ended up with 32 cars in the youtube tournament and 40 cars in the family tournament. The final two cars were from MadisonBogart and MySmallTownLife. A big congratulations to CJ (Adam of MySmallTownLife’s cousin)!!!

That night we invited family over and ordered some pizza. Sarah went all out with hot wheels decorations. The kids had fun. I think the adults did too. We broadcast the race live on blogtv. The sound was not ideal with a lot of background noise. If/when we do this again I will use a different microphone. I will also arrange the cameras differently. I recorded most of the event through blogtv which was poor quality. I had to go back and run the cars on the big track just to get some footage to use for the video.

Next month is Project Noodles. Any guesses what that might be?

Ready to Race

Our brackets are filling up. I have divided the tournament in two. One tournament for the Team Stubz YouTube community and one for family. I think this will be more fun for both groups if they know the people they are racing.  I also ordered a trophy for each bracket.  Below is a link to fill out your own bracket prediction and follow along with the results.  I think I will broadcast the race live on Saturday April 21st but that would leave only a day or two for everyone to fill out brackets.  We will see how much interest in bracket predictions there is.  Otherwise, I think there would be more interest in a live broadcast.  I know all the racers are anxious to see how their cars do.

Hot Wheels Race Track Update

Hot Wheels Race Track Update

First of all, we got 5 cars from viewers in the mail yesterday!  Thanks to scottsadventures and GreyP455 for sending in your cars.  You rock! If you haven’t yet, send in your own car or sponsor one.

This weekend I spent some time trying to figure out the best way to do the track.  I purchased 20 ft of single-lane track from Wal-Mart and my original plan was to have the track start on a 6ft board that Stubz Jr. already uses as a track then attach 8-inch wide cardboard sections (cereal boxes seem to work fine).  I knew I wanted the track to be long to give enough time in each race for possible lead changes.

I turned to Google and YouTube to find ideas.  I came across a video of a Hot Wheels club in Ohio (I never knew such a thing existed until TheresGabe told me he used to be in a club in Utah) and they had a cool track that was black and curved and allowed for some interesting races.  I did some more research and found that the track was made in the 70′s by Hot Wheels and was called a Sizzlers Fat Track.  So I looked on ebay and found some and it should get here any day.

This track will connect to 3 lanes of my current track and will be the first 16ft of the race track.  With the help of some nephews, I plan to create a really long track either at my house or a park with a big hill.  I am including a few videos that are my inspiration for my EPIC track.

PS – I want to get my hands on a car with a camera so I can get some cool footage for the video. They are $30 on amazon. Should I do it?

Most of my track might end up like this.

Today we started improving the track.  I have some big plans for this track that will be sure to catch some attention.  We have over 30 entries in our possession and I have yet to check the mailbox today.  I will update you on the track tomorrow.
